Black Caiman

The Black Caiman is the largest member of the caiman family – and one of the biggest predators in the Amazon! With dark, armour-like scales that help it blend into murky waters, this powerful reptile can grow up to 5 metres long and sits right at the top of the food chain.

Found in slow-moving rivers, lakes, and flooded forests, the Black Caiman plays a crucial role in maintaining balance in its ecosystem. Sadly, it was once hunted nearly to extinction for its skin, but thanks to conservation efforts, its numbers are slowly recovering.

At Crocodiles of the World, our Black Caimans are among the most impressive residents – awe-inspiring, mysterious, and a powerful reminder of the wild wonders of South America.
