Cuvier's Dwarf Caiman
The Cuvier's Dwarf Caiman is one of the smallest and most elusive members of the crocodilian family, growing to only about 1.5 metres in length. Found in the slow-moving rivers and swamps of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, this little caiman may be small, but it packs a punch with its powerful bite and fierce predatory instincts.
With its dark, rugged armour and sharp teeth, it hunts mainly small fish, amphibians, and invertebrates. Cuvier's Dwarf Caiman is known for its shy nature and spends much of its time hiding in the water or under dense vegetation, making it a real treasure to spot in the wild.
This species is relatively safe from the threats facing larger crocodilians, but like many other species, it faces habitat destruction and pollution. At Crocodiles of the World, our Cuvier's Dwarf Caimans offer an intimate look at one of the most fascinating and underrated members of the caiman family.
