Schneiders Dwarf Caiman

The Schneider’s Dwarf Caiman is a small yet mighty member of the crocodilian family, found in the slow-moving waters of the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Growing to just over 1.5 metres, this species is known for its dark, camouflaged appearance, which helps it remain hidden in dense, murky waters.

Unlike its larger relatives, the Schneider's Dwarf Caiman is relatively shy and spends much of its time submerged, emerging primarily at night to hunt small fish, amphibians, and invertebrates. Its small size and elusive nature make it one of the more secretive caimans, offering a rare and intriguing glimpse into the world of these fascinating reptiles.

While not currently at significant risk, Schneider's Dwarf Caiman faces challenges from habitat loss and environmental pressures. At Crocodiles of the World, our Schneider's Dwarf Caimans provide a fascinating opportunity to learn more about the diverse and often misunderstood world of caimans.
