Spectacled Caiman

The Spectacled Caiman is one of the most common and widespread caiman species in Central and South America, easily recognized by the bony ridge across its eyes that gives it the appearance of wearing spectacles. These medium-sized crocodilians thrive in a range of habitats, from slow-moving rivers and swamps to marshes and lakes, where they play an important role in controlling fish and amphibian populations.

Growing up to 3 metres in length, the Spectacled Caiman is a highly adaptable predator, preying on a variety of animals, from fish to birds and small mammals. Despite its widespread distribution, it faces threats from habitat destruction and illegal hunting for its skin.

At Crocodiles of the World, our Spectacled Caimans are a great example of the resilience and versatility of the caiman family, offering an exciting opportunity to learn about these remarkable reptiles.
