Tomistoma

The Tomistoma, also known as the Sunda gharial or False gharial, is a strikingly unique crocodilian found in the freshwater rivers and wetlands of Southeast Asia. With a long, slender snout and narrow, sharp teeth, the Tomistoma closely resembles a gharial, though it is more closely related to true crocodiles.

Reaching lengths of up to 4.5 metres, these semi-aquatic predators are known for their quiet, stealthy nature, often lurking in the water to ambush fish, amphibians, and small mammals. Unlike other crocodilians, Tomistomas primarily rely on their agility and speed in the water rather than brute strength to catch prey.

Currently classified as vulnerable, Tomistomas face threats from habitat loss, hunting, and pollution, making conservation efforts critical for their survival. At Crocodiles of the World, we are dedicated to showcasing this rare and fascinating species, highlighting the importance of protecting Southeast Asia’s remarkable wildlife.
