Yacare Caiman

The Yacare Caiman is a medium-sized crocodilian found in the wetlands, rivers, and swamps of central South America, particularly in Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina. Reaching up to 3 metres in length, it closely resembles the Spectacled Caiman but can be distinguished by its more robust build and prominent teeth that remain visible even when its mouth is closed.

An opportunistic predator, the Yacare Caiman feeds on fish, birds, and small mammals, and is especially known for preying on invasive species like piranhas. Agile and highly adaptable, it thrives in both permanent water bodies and seasonal floodplains.

Once hunted heavily for its skin, Yacare Caiman populations have rebounded thanks to successful conservation efforts. At Crocodiles of the World, you can get an up-close look at this fascinating species and learn about its role in maintaining the delicate balance of South America’s aquatic ecosystems.
