Caiman Lizard
The Caiman Lizard is a striking and unusual reptile native to the swamps and flooded forests of South America, particularly in the Amazon Basin. With its powerful, crocodile-like tail, muscular limbs, and vibrant green body with a red or orange head, this semi-aquatic lizard is perfectly adapted for a life between water and land.
Growing up to 1.2 metres in length, the Caiman Lizard is a specialist feeder, using its strong jaws to crush hard-shelled prey like snails, clams, and crustaceans. Its forked tongue helps it locate food, while its sharp claws and tail make it an excellent climber and swimmer.
Although not currently endangered, the Caiman Lizard faces threats from habitat loss and the exotic pet trade. At Crocodiles of the World, our Caiman Lizards help visitors discover the diversity of reptile life and the importance of protecting the ecosystems they call home.
